Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. Take note, depending on the curriculum you are working to, text types may be referred to using slightly differing terms. These categories include narratives, expository texts, technical texts and persuasive texts, which can be distinguished by examining what the author's intent and how the author goes about achieving the intended result. At times, the chronological structure can be reordered by using techniques such as flashbacks etc, but generally this is the domain of fictional recounts. To teach to the Common Core, I like to relate learning with real world experiences. On a piece of paper have the students draw an x and a y axis. Students are most familiar with recipes, so that is where I begin this unit to introduce this type of text.
